This Privacy Policy explains how the Messages app ("the app", "we", "us") handles your information. Messages is an SMS & MMS application that can act as your device's default messaging app. We designed it to keep your data on your device.
To function as a messaging app, Messages needs access to certain data. This data is used only to provide app features and is processed on your device:
Messages are stored on your device in the Android system message store and in a local, on-device cache used to make the app fast. If you use the optional Backup feature, a backup file is written to the location you choose (for example, your device storage). We do not upload this file anywhere.
The app does not collect, transmit or store the content of your messages, your contacts, or your identity on any server operated by us. We do not require you to sign in.
We do not share your personal data with third parties. When you send a message, it is delivered through your mobile carrier's network, exactly as with any SMS/MMS app. Your carrier's handling of messages is governed by your carrier's own privacy policy.
Reply suggestions and detection of codes, links and phone numbers are performed on your device. The optional smart-features component is downloaded from Google Play on demand; the text of your messages is processed locally and is not sent to us.
Android may ask you to grant permissions such as SMS, Contacts, Phone and Notifications. You can review or revoke these at any time in your device's Settings → Apps → Messages → Permissions. Some features will not work without the permissions they rely on.
Messages is a general-audience utility and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Because your data stays on your device, its security is tied to your device's security. We recommend using a screen lock and keeping your device software up to date.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, within the app or store listing.
